American Physical Society, Prairie Section Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Prairie Section of the American Physical Society (PSAPS) is Thursday, February 20, through Saturday, February 22, at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL. The PSAPS Section meeting is a low-cost and exciting way to connect with physicists in our region. The PSAPS meeting has been a particularly good way for students (undergraduate and graduate) and early career professionals to find a home in the physics ecosystem beyond their home location. There is great physics on the prairie!

There are excellent plenary speakers, including:

  • Vipin Chaudhary – Kevin J. Kranzusch Professor and Chair at Case Western Reserve University who will talk about the AI revolution
  • Jason Keleher – An international leader in CMP research will talk about nanoscience
  • Bahar Basim – an industrial physicist at Intel will discuss semiconductor manufacturing
  • Brendan Casey – A scientist at FNAL will give an overview of Fermilab’s Muon Campus

Workshops on Friday afternoon include:

  • How to develop an elevator pitch – delivered by C2ST
  • Introduction to Microscopy – a hands-on workshop delivered by the McCrone Group
  • AI Basics – a hands-on overview and tutorial of the various AI tools currently available

The Aviation Department at Lewis University will also make their Frasca RTD flight simulators available, for a modest fee. Your 30-minute simulated flight experience will be guided by a certified flight instructor from their flight program.

Please note that the APS Prairie Section leadership have agreed to refund the registration fee for any student who attends the conference in person. Furthermore, the section leadership have agreed to provide up to $100 to reimburse costs incurred by students registered for PSAPS who present either a poster or oral talk. This offer is too good to pass-up!

The SPS Zone 9 Meeting will take place Feb 21-22. SPS attendees will have access to PS-APS activities as well. The SPS Zone 9 Meeting has no registration fee.
